We always confuse distinguish about soccer and football. Example: why total football, not total soccer? I think it connected with history of the origin country which create its name (soccer or football). Soccer was known at Australia and USA. Football was known in Europe. But in USA, football is the different sport, like a rugby, so called American Football. According to wikipedia, American football, referred to as football in the United States and Canada, and also known as "gridiron football"
or simply "gridiron", is a sport played by two teams of eleven players
on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end. ... The team with the
most points at the end of a game wins. American football calling coach, while soccer or football calling head manager. Both of them have the same authority..
How about the definition of football (in Europe) or soccer (in USA)? Based on Wikipedia, Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer iis a team sport played between two teams of eleven players with a spherical ball. It is played by 250 million players in over 200 countries and dependencies, making it the world's most popular sport. The game is played on a rectangular field with a goal at each end. The object of the game is to score by getting the ball into the opposing goal. According to timesofindia.indiatimes.com: What Americans call soccer is called football elsewhere in the world. So, it is better to say that American Soccer and British Football are the same sport. The official name of the sport is Association Football and the international body governing it is FIFA (Federation International de Football Associatif).Mar 18, 2006. So, football or soccer, is the same sport, depend on where we live. Both of them are correct.
FIFA, the highest organization for football sport, was happier to use football word than soccer word, because FIFA headquarters is located in Switzterland, Europe. So, acronym of FIFA: Federation of International Football Association, not Federation of International Soccer Association. Like wise the confederation of FIFA, such as AFC for Asian region, Concacaf for USA and North America region, Conmebol for South America, etc, use football word than soccer word in their acronym. They followed their headquarters, FIFA. I think football word is more formal than soccer word, because it recognized by FIFA, the highest organization for football sport. But, soccer word look unformal and look simple word.
